The partnership to me is all about those valuable things we inherit from previous generations that in turn we want to pass on to the future generation. (FL Oscar Mpetha High School Teacher)
Hlanganani is about building a relationship between these two countries. It is about learning from one another and sharing our different skills. Hlanganani is to be able to communicate and to be a leader. The thing that I like about this project is that is encourages young people to be educated and to be able to stand on your own. It is a different project from others that we know. To be on Hlanganani project it is not about the colour of your skin or being rich or poor. It is for everyone, but those who are willing to work hard. (Anon)
When it all started I couldn’t understand what was happening. I didn’t know anything. I was just shy and scared being around many strangers who seemingly knew everything. It’s been three years since I’ve joined and it’s actually the first time I feel free. It is only now that I have let go of my insecurities and shyness and have realised that these people are my friends and my second family. I’m honoured and fortunate to be part of this project. I think that the site is great because it actually gives South African students and learners in the UK a chance to share some pictures and some ideas and to me that shows that there is a unity that exists between the two countries. The site will allow people who are in the project to connect. (Anon)
Hlanganani is about working together as a team. It is about building relationships, getting to know other cultures as well. In Hlanganani we all share our our work beyond the formal educational settings into community and cultural organisations. (PL South African Learner)
I have a job in a bank in Cape Town now and a daughter who is 3 years old. I am still very interested in the project and am here to offer you any help I can. (Tabisa, former learner and participant in the Hlanganani project)
